    Women in AI

    Dr. Poppy Crum

    Neuroscientist, Stanford University

Dr. Poppy Crum is a neuroscientist and Adjunct Professor at Stanford University, specializing in the intersection of AI, sensory perception, and human-computer interaction. She was previously the Chief Scientist at Dolby Laboratories, where she led research on immersive audio and visual experiences for over a decade.

Crum's research explores how AI can be used to understand and augment human perception — how we hear, see, and process sensory information. At Dolby, she pioneered the use of machine learning to optimize audio and visual experiences based on human perceptual science.

Her popular TED Talk, 'Technology That Knows What You're Feeling,' explored how physiological sensors combined with AI can reveal human emotions and cognitive states — raising important questions about privacy and the 'end of the poker face.' She holds over 30 patents related to audio and perceptual technology.

Crum's work is at the cutting edge of 'empathic technology' — AI systems that can understand and respond to human emotional and physiological states.
