Elizabeth Kelly
Director, US AI Safety Institute
Elizabeth Kelly is the inaugural Director of the United States Artificial Intelligence Safety Institute (AISI) at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Appointed in February 2024, she leads the US government's primary effort to develop guidelines, standards, and evaluation frameworks for safe and trustworthy AI.
Before joining NIST, Kelly served as Special Assistant to the President for Economic Policy at the White House National Economic Council, where she worked on technology and economic policy issues. She has also held positions at the Treasury Department and in the private sector.
The US AI Safety Institute, established following the UK AI Safety Summit in November 2023, is responsible for testing and evaluating frontier AI models, developing safety benchmarks, and collaborating with international partners on AI safety standards. Kelly was named to TIME's 100 Most Influential People in AI in 2024.
