    Sougwen Chung

    Artist & Researcher

Sougwen Chung is a Chinese-Canadian artist and researcher whose pioneering work explores human-machine collaboration in art. They create paintings, drawings, and installations by working alongside AI-powered robotic arms — called D.O.U.G. (Drawing Operations Unit: Generation) — that are trained on their own artistic style using neural networks.

Chung's art practice raises fundamental questions about creativity, authorship, and the relationship between human and artificial intelligence. Their work has been exhibited at major cultural institutions worldwide, including the Smithsonian, the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Victoria and Albert Museum, and Art Basel.

Before focusing on art, Chung was a research fellow at MIT Media Lab, where they explored the intersection of technology, art, and human perception. They have been a TED Fellow and have delivered talks at major technology and art conferences.

Chung's work is significant because it goes beyond using AI as a tool — they create collaborative partnerships with AI systems, producing art that neither human nor machine could create alone.
